This is hopefully the last we will hear about one of the silliest lawsuits to come out of Hollywood. Donald Trump has withdrawn his $5 million lawsuit against Real Time host Bill Maher. Trump filed the lawsuit in early February after what boils down to a simple joke being taken far too seriously. On January 7th, Maher appeared on The Tonight Show, pledging that he would donate $5 million to the charities of Trump’s choice if Trump could prove that he wasn’t “the spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan.” While this was clearly a jab at Trump’s similar offer regarding President Obama’s records during last year’s elections, Trump does not know how to take a joke.
The day after Maher’s Leno appearance, Trump accepted Maher’s pledge in writing and says in the breach of contract suit that he provided his birth certificate proving he's the "son of Fred Trump", and demanded that Maher cough up the cash.
Trump had his lawyers file the request for dismissal with prejudice in LA Superior Court in March 29th, but Trump’s EVP and Special Counsel has gone on record as saying “the lawsuit was temporarily withdrawn to be amended and refiled at later date.” Let us hope Trump’s lawyers and PR team can convince him otherwise.
