ABC’s Once Upon A Time spinoff, which is now officially called Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, has casted its Red Queen. British actress Emma Rigby (Hollyoaks) has landed the role of the wicked and merciless Red Queen, based on the playing card that originated in the beloved Lewis Carrol novel Through The Looking Glass.
The spinoff helms from Once Upon A Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, and will be set in Wonderland before it was cursed. The series has already cast the lead role of Alice (Sophie Lowe), through whose point of view the story will be told. Joining Lowe is actor Peter Gadiot as Alice’s love interest Cyrus, Michael Socha as The Knave of Hearts, and now Rigby as the Red Queen.
In the spinoff, Alice is a young woman with a generous heart, but she is struggling to carry with her the scars of her difficult past. The Red Queen, also known in the books as Iracebeth, is a woman with a short temper and a merciless hand she uses to strike down her enemies and anyone who dares to betray her. The character of the Red Queen has been portrayed most recently by Helena Bonham-Carter in the 2010 Tim Burton movie alongside Johnny Depp.
Filming is set to begin immediately following the wrap of Once Upon A Time’s second season, on April 7th in Vancouver.
