HBO Films releases trailer for 'Behind the Candelabra: The Secret Life of Liberace'
Here's one I'm really excited for: HBO Films has released a new trailer for their upcoming TV feature 'Behind the Candelabra: The Secret Life of Liberace' starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, directed by Steven Soderbergh.
Soderbergh has won an Academy Award for Best Director (for 'Traffic') and recently announced his retirement from filmmaking; this makes 'Behind the Candelabra' one of the auteur's final projects, upping the anticipation level even further. Add to that the starring actors of Michael Douglas, who has won an Oscar for Best Actor ('Wall Street') and Matt Damon, who has been nominated for two acting Oscars, and you have yourself a dream-team. All of that talent and those accolades make 'Behind the Candelabra' a must-see television event even before you consider the subject matter being adapted, however that consideration makes this event red-hot.
'Behind the Candelabra: The Secret Life of Liberace' is adapted from Scott Thorson's autobiographical novel 'Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace.' Within, Thorson recounts his life and relationship with the famous pianist and performer from the time they met until the aftermath of their love affair. The trailer shows an uncanny transformation on Douglas' part, into the famous showman known for his colorful clothing and even more colorful demeanor. The setting seems as lavish and ornate as Liberace himself would have liked and the film promises a visual feast if nothing else.
Despite Damon's age at the time of filming, Thorson was actually seventeen years old when he began his relationship with Liberace in 1976. Liberace had previously won a legal suit for defamation of character during the 1960s when a newspaper tabloid insinuated his homosexuality, after which he famously declared that reading the insinuation had him "crying all the way to the bank."
The screenplay was adapted by Richard LaGravenese ('Water for Elephants,' 'Beautiful Creatures') and the cast is rounded out by Scott Bakula, Dan Akroyd and Rob Lowe. The HBO Film airs on May 26. Expect 'Behind the Candelabra: The Secret Life of Liberace' to loom large over every television awards show, come the end of the season.
