Elementary fans are finally going to be introduced to one of the most important women in Sherlock Holmes life. Game of Thrones and The Tudors actress Natalie Dormer has been cast to play Holmes former lover, Irene Adler, in a three-episode arc starting on May 9th. As was mentioned in previous episodes of Elementary, Irene Adler lost her life at the hands of Moriarty.
Elementary executive producer and creator Rob Doherty is excited to have Dormer on board for the role of Irene. “We’re moving to the next chapter in our show — and in some ways, to a previous chapter in Holmes’ story,” Doherty said in a statement. “Irene Adler is perhaps the most pivotal relationship in Sherlock’s life, and I can’t think of an actress better suited to the challenge than Natalie.”
Irene played a pivotal role in Sherlock Holmes’ (Jonny Lee Miller) life, before her mysterious murder at the hands of Sherlock’s nemesis Moriarty. Irene was Sherlock’s first, and only, love in London. It was the death of Irene that sent Sherlock into a downward spiral and led to his drug addiction.
“She’s an important element to Sherlock’s backstory. I’d love to have a face to that name,” Doherty told reporters during the winter press tour in January. “She's got to be unique. You will see a living, breathing actress reading lines and portraying Irene.”
Dormer has been keeping busy, starring on the massively popular HBO series Game of Thrones as Margaery Tyrell. Do you think she will breathe life into Irene Adler on Elementary?
