Fox’s “Glee” remains as timely as today’s headlines.
The musical cast Patty Duke (“The Patty Duke Show”) and Meredith Baxter (“Family Ties”) as a lesbian couple who become mentors to characters Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (played by Darren Criss).
Blaine first meets Duke’s character in the finale while looking for a ring for Kurt to propose. Duke and Baxter’s characters have been together for 25 years, and offer to be mentors to the young gay couple and show how society has changed in their time together.
It seems Blaine could possibly go to New York to join other characters Rachel (played by Lea Michele), Kurt and Santana (played by Naya Rivera).
Baxter (who herself recently came out) and Duke, who will return for season five, are the latest guest stars on this season of “Glee”: Idina Menzel will return as Rachel’s mother and Katey Sagal will play Artie’s mom.
The story was apparently inspired by the same- sex marriage case currently being heard by the Supreme Court. Show co- creator Ryan Murphy is openly gay, and hosted a fund- raising dinner for President Obama’s campaign in May.
“Glee” airs Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.
