Kids sing the darnedest things!
At least that's what NBC is hoping. The New York Post reports that, hot on the heels of rumors that their cornerstone hit "The Voice" would be returning for a new season, comes rumors that the network is prepping a kids version of the series.
"We are hoping [to begin production] by the end of the year," a source close to the show told The Post.
Evidently plans were in motion to film the new project in conjunction with the NBC hit, but the timing did not work out. Production went as far as issuing casting calls for 8 to 14 year old singers in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas last week, but those were put on hold just days later. "There wasn’t enough time to get it together [before the upcoming fifth cycle]," the insider said.
The current plan is to produce the series when "The Voice" returns for its fifth season, a renewal that is all but a given at this point.
"The Voice" has been one of the few dependable hits in NBC's struggling schedule, and the network is no doubt hoping to duplicate this success with the spin-off series. "The Voice Kids" has already proven to be a hit in Germany, Holland and Finland. On the other hand, "American Idol"'s attempt at a similar theme with "American Juniors" flopped in 2003.
