'Grammys' crasher Vitalii Sediuk facing six-month jail sentence

Vitalii Sediuk on stage at The Grammys

Live television slip-ups, mishaps and fumbles may be entertaining to watch, but you can be sure that the culprits aren’t laughing quite as much after the fact. Vitalii Sediuk, the Ukrainian television prankster who crashed this year’s Grammy Awards by rushing the stage during Adele’s win, now has charges filed against him by the Los Angeles City Attorney.

“The safety and protection of both participants and attendees of major events held in this city is a priority of my office,” said City Attorney Carmen Trutanich in a statement. “In this age of heightened security, any person who intentionally crosses that line and acts in an irresponsible manner will be held accountable for his or her actions.”

Seduik has been charged with one count of willfully leaving a spectator area and entering a performance area and one count of interfering and delaying program participants. In the end, Sediuk could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for each count. Arraignment has been scheduled for May 31, 2013 in Los Angeles Superior Court and Deputy City Attorneys Will Rivera and Heidi Matz have been assigned to prosecute the case.

This is not the first run in with the law that Sediuk has orchestrated, having previously shown up at the Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre wearing a replica of Bjork’s infamous swan dress and a basket of souvenir Oscars.

While I don't agree at all with this person's behaviour, is "willfully leaving a spectator area and entering a performance area" now a crime meriting jail time? In the greater scheme of things, it seems more of a prank than a crime. Not something to be condoned, but worthy of jail time? A thug broke into my 80 year old parents' home, assaulted them and, while not directly responsible, both died within a few months and this assault didn't help. The perpetrator got a lesser sentence than that for interrupting Adele. That doesn't seem quite right...
