Starz is set to high the high seas, unveiling the first trailer for their anticipated pirate adventure series "Black Sails."
The swashbuckling adventure is pegged as a prequel set twenty years prior to the events of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel "Treasure Island." The story revolves around the novel's pirate hero Captain Flint (portrayed by "Die Another Day"'s Toby Stephens) and his crew as they seek sanctuary at the pirate paradise New Providence Island, where they must fight for survival among a brutal population of villainy.
The series hails from creators Jon Steinberg ("Jericho") and Robert Levine ("Touch"), backed up by big budget action director Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes production company. "I’m excited to branch out into television, especially doing a long-form series for STARZ, a network known for supporting cutting-edge programming," said Bay of the series.
"Starz is excited to be working with a visionary like Michael. Along with the high-octane action that is a hallmark of a Michael Bay production, it has the elements that Starz originals are striving to bring to the premium landscape: epic, larger than life, cinematic storytelling. The series is also a property we believe will appeal to the global content marketplace with broadcasters around the world," Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said of the series.
The trailer seems to indicate that the series will stay true to Starz typical original programming vein -- action and sex combined in a style similar to their other period piece efforts "Spartacus" and "Camelot." It also boasts some pretty impressive production values, with stellar photography, costumes and sets that wouldn't look out of place in a feature film.
