In a genius bit of cross-marketing, actress Jane Lynch will be signing the song "Little Girls" on this week's episode of Glee (which airs on April 25).
What makes this so smart is that the song is from the musical Annie and sung in it by Miss Hannigan, the mean orphanage boss. Lynch is scheduled to perform as Hannigan during a limited engagement on the current Broadway revival of the play at the Palace Theatre, which begins May 16.
This will be Lynch's Broadway debut. She is replacing Katie Finneran, who has joined a new NBC comedy series that stars Michael J. Fox. Annie has tumbled a bit since its solid November 2012 opening, so this bit of stunt casting is designed to give the show a shot in the arm. Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella and Matilda recently opened on Broadway, giving Annie some real competition.
Hannigan and Sue Sylvester (Lynch's Glee character) are similar in their views of insubordination from the girls they hold under their thumbs. The song fits well with both character's mentalities.
Glee has pulled this trick before, as Kristin Chenoweth, in a 2010 episode, sang songs from the musical Promises, Promises, which she was appearing in at the same time on Broadway.
