In tragic news, a Chinese celebrity diving series has come under fire after an 18-year-old assistant to one of the show's stars died Friday.
Producers of Celebrity Splash China, which airs on Zhejiang Satellite TV, revealed the news Saturday on its mini-blog. Star actor Shi Xiaolong was training in the pool on Friday when his assistant drowned in the other end of the pool.
“After the incident, the program production crew and the staff on site embarked on a swift rescue operation and brought the involved individual to the hospital, but after a four-hour attempt he could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead,” the blog read. “We feel sorry and pained about this."
The victim has been identified as an 18-year-old with the surname Peng who was a member of Shi's martial arts troupe.
The series has not announced anything regarding an interruption in its broadcast schedule. Its Saturday episode was removed from the air, but that was unrelated to this, as it was pulled to provide coverage of an earthquake that hit the Sichuan Province.
The series has announced that more lifeguards will be placed around the pool.
The series is an adaptation of the Dutch program, Celebrity Splash. It is one of two diving series that launched this month in China.
