WARNING: MINOR PLOT SPOILERS BELOW
The final four episodes of the freshman season of the CW hit 'Arrow' began last night in earnest, shaking up the status quo of the series and leaving several relationships town asunder. As last night's episode came to a close, Tommy had walked out on Laurel and Diggle had walked out on Oliver; what's next for our heroes?
Next week's episode, the twenty-first of the season, is titled "The Undertaking." The official description from The CW is as follows:
Finding it difficult to mend fences with Tommy (Colin Donnell) and Diggle (David Ramsey), Oliver (Stephen Amell) instead focuses on crossing another name off the list. While digging through a crooked accountant’s laptop, Felicity (guest star Emily Bett Rickards) discovers a transaction that could help Oliver find Walter. To reconfirm the lead, Oliver gambles that Felicity can be counted on in the field for the first time. In a flashback, Malcolm (guest star John Barrowman) reveals to Robert Queen (guest star Jamey Sheridan) and Frank Chen (guest star Chin Han) painful details surrounding his wife’s murder, and how that shaped his plans for the Glades. Meanwhile, Tommy (Colin Donnell) stuns Laurel (Katie Cassidy) with the truth.
Exciting news! It seems that with the season coming to a close in three short episodes, existing plot threads are being picked back up and woven back into the present fabric. Some backstory is set to be revealed between Malcom and Robert, as you can see from the images above and below.
Considering how well the writing on 'Arrow' has teased the island flashbacks, while keeping a lot of the story locked away inside Oliver's tortured noggin, offering flashbacks behind Malcom's plan for the Glades makes narrativistic sense--however these flashbacks will mark the first that the audience is privy to backstory that Oliver is unaware of.
As the very last shot of the very first episode of 'Arrow' proved, this is a series that is willing to let its audience in on secrets that the hero has yet to uncover; "The Undertaking" merely marks the first time we've been offered flashbacks to flesh out the mystery behind Moira & Robert's involvement in Malcom's dastardly schemes.
As season one has progressed, more and more people have been let into Oliver's secret trust, aware of his vigilantism under the green hood. Tommy is the latest addition to this clandestine crew and he isn't taking the news as well as others; his knowledge that Laurel would be with Oliver if she knew the truth has lead Tommy to walk out of her life. Now that Tommy is at odds with his best friend and has left the woman he loves, where will he turn? Back to his father, whose spirits toil in frame of villainies?
And finally--what is to become of Diggle? Will he try to continue his vigilantism without Oliver's help? Could he become competition or even an enemy of the hood? What's next for our heroes? Check out the twenty-first episode of the season next week, "The Undertaking" on The CW!
