Kathie Lee Gifford drums up support for 'Today' host Matt Lauer

Kathie Lee to "Today" show staff: give Matt Lauer a break!

While the beleaguered morning show host suffers in the public eye after his rumored involvement in axing co-host Ann Curry, Lauer's "Today" compatriot is rallying the troops in a show of solidarity.

Gifford told the New York Daily News that she was tired of seeing Lauer's name dragged through the dirt, and took it upon herself to draft a letter of support which was signed by many of the morning show's cast and crew.

"We all wanted to say something to Matt and nobody wanted to put him in a position that would make him uncomfortable," Gifford explained. "So unbeknownst to anyone higher up at NBC, I just started this thing."

Lauer reportedly embraced the show of support, but declined the idea of having it published in a full page USA Today advertisement. The letter read, "We the people of the Today' show who work side by side, day by day, year in and year out with Matt Lauer are tired of unfounded and unrelenting stories by faceless characters regarding his character and reputation. No one has coerced us to sign this. With our signatures we stand in support of our colleague and friend."

The letter comes as blowback against Lauer is at an all-time high following the publication of Brian Stelter's behind the scenes book on the morning show wars "Top of the Morning." The book touches on, among other things, Curry's messy departure from the show and alleged suffering while she served as news anchor and co-host opposite Lauer.

Kathy: You've just added another reason to bring the ratings down even further. Mind your own business - though we know you can't do that. Lauer is making multi-millions, he's not a charity case, nor is he a victim. It's a shame Gifford didn't drum up support for Curry. She's the one publicly stoned and the one being given solitary confinement by NBC. How does Hoda take this witch who uses religion to pretend she knows what's right and what's wrong.
