Despite mediocre ratings for its planted backdoor pilot on Thursday night, The CW's Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals has been ordered to series. The network has also granted early renewals to freshman Beauty and the Beast and sophomore Hart of Dixie.
Back in February, The CW handed even earlier renewals to Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and Arrow. Still in contention to return next season are Nikita and The Carrie Diaries.
"As soon as we saw last night's episode of The Vampire Diaries, we knew we wanted more of The Originals — Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson have done a fantastic job with The Vampire Diaries, which is as fast-paced and well-written as ever, and Julie has created an equally compelling world for The Originals," announced CW president Mark Pedowitz. "We're also very excited to bring back Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie for next season — both series continue to be creatively strong and compelling, and their fans are incredibly passionate."
In addition to her duties on Diaries and Originals, Plec is executive producing the hot CW pilot Tomorrow People along with Arrow showrunner Greg Berlanti. Williamson also had his other series, FOX's The Following, picked up for a second season.
What did you think of The Originals? Does it deserve its own series?
