'Vampire Diaries' spinoff picked up, CW renews two others

The OriginalsDespite mediocre ratings for its planted backdoor pilot on Thursday night, The CW's Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals has been ordered to series. The network has also granted early renewals to freshman Beauty and the Beast and sophomore Hart of Dixie.

Back in February, The CW handed even earlier renewals to Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and Arrow. Still in contention to return next season are Nikita and The Carrie Diaries.

"As soon as we saw last night's episode of The Vampire Diaries, we knew we wanted more of The Originals — Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson have done a fantastic job with The Vampire Diaries, which is as fast-paced and well-written as ever, and Julie has created an equally compelling world for The Originals," announced CW president Mark Pedowitz. "We're also very excited to bring back Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie for next season — both series continue to be creatively strong and compelling, and their fans are incredibly passionate."

In addition to her duties on Diaries and Originals, Plec is executive producing the hot CW pilot Tomorrow People along with Arrow showrunner Greg Berlanti. Williamson also had his other series, FOX's The Following, picked up for a second season.

What did you think of The Originals? Does it deserve its own series?

Hart of Dixie is a cute, refreshing series! I'm excited to find out what happens next with Zoe and Jonah. :D I'm ecstatic over The Originals coming to the CW! More yummy vampire goodness! The Vampire Diaries finale was the best one yet! Awesome writing Julie Plec!! :D

The Originals would be awesome, I just hope this doesn't affect how much screen time Klaus and Rebecca get on The Vampire Diaries. Plus, we definitely want more Elijah in The Vampire Diaries.

Vampire diaries "well-written"?  Plots maybe, character-development maybe.  Dialog, nearly total drivel.   The profoundly tedious arguing and discussion over a girl, and then later, over her humanity was more of cheap filler or weak connective tissue between scenes that hardly rose above the Twilight series.  As for character development: each character was a point.  Development or character evolution never happened, but rather you get circumstances in which a temporary "switch" gets flipped, and then flipped back to contiue ossifying.
