The Mindy Project, the Fox series created by and starring The Office veteran Mindy Kaling (and the show's namesake), has become a bright spot for Fox. The comedy does not dominate in the ratings, drawing an average of about 3 million viewers per episode, but critics love it. That counts for something right?
The series has already begun gearing up for its sophomore season, as Xosha Roquemore has been added to the cast permanently after appearing in three episodes. This is considered a bit of a coup for the program, as Roquemore was scheduled to appear in a TV Land series with Kirstie Alley but was allowed to leave for this higher-profile gig.
So Matt Warburton, an executive producer on the show, is riding high these days. He recently talked about the series, specifically this week's episode that revolves around a triathlon. He seems excited, so you should be too!
One of the biggest things viewers will take away from this episode is that Christina (played by Chloe Sevigny), the ex-wife of Danny (Chris Messina), becomes less of a mystery.
"Given how big of a deal Christina has always been to Danny, I think what’s interesting is how unpredictable his reaction about her coming back is. Sometimes when you haven’t seen someone in a while, you build up this version of them that isn’t quite them anymore. And then when you actually see the person again, you’re surprised by how you react. That, I think, is the biggest shock to Danny when Christina comes back. And the biggest shock to Mindy, for example, who’s always wondered about this person – as fascinated as she is by Danny – she sees Christina as this key to unlocking this crazy weirdo that she’s obsessed with. Watching Danny’s reaction to Christina? To Mindy, it’s like watching the most interesting thing in the world," Warburton said.
On Mindy's triathlon team, Jeremy will be doing the biking, Danny will be swimming ("In his Speedo. It’s really gonna help the ratings," Warburton added) and Mindy will be...well, she will be interested in "getting some cool running shoes."
Expect Danny and Jeremy to have to carry the team. Would you have guessed anything different?
The triathlon episode airs this Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.
