An IFC miniseries has booked a couple of big stars.
Tobey Maguire and Kristen Wiig will star opposite Will Ferrell in “The Spoils of Babylon.” The six-episode miniseries will be produced by Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Funny Or Die.
The epic story will be along the lines of “The Thorn Birds” and “Winds of War.” It will show a family whole struck it rich in the oil business. They of course end up mixed up in illegal arms deals and international espionage. Ferrell will play the Shah of Iran. Maguire plays Devon Morehouse, who is adopted by Cynthia Morehouse’s (Wiig) family. The two later run the seventh largest company in the world while wrestling with their feelings for each other.
Matt Piedmont (“Casa de mi Padre”) directs and co-wrote the script with Andrew Steele (“Saturday Night Live”). Ferrell, McKay, Steele and Piedmont will exec produce.
Wiig (“Saturday Night Live”) has a connection to Ferrell and McKay, as she appears in the “Anchorman” sequel. She also played Dewey the Bear’s keeper in “Semi-Pro.”
Maguire (“Spiderman”) plays Nick Carraway in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” that stars Leonardo DiCaprio.
