Since it was announced that The Office would be closing shop at Dunder-Mifflin after season nine, fans have been wondering whether or not Michael Scott (Steve Carell) would make one final farewell to Jim, Pam, Dwight and the rest of the office. Conflicting reports have been swirling around for months, and fans are desperate for solid news of his return (or lack thereof).
Even though The Office executive producer Greg Daniels has denied any appearance by Carell on the May 16th series finale, others are saying that this denial was in fact a sneaky way of confirming the appearance. In a conference call with reporters, Daniels said “I think Steve felt, and I agree, that the ‘Goodbye, Michael’ episode was his goodbye and he didn’t want to overshadow the ending that all the other characters deserved.” The possible interpretation to this is that Carell’s return will not overshadow the ending, but that there will still be a return.
In addition to this, last week on the Late Show With David Letterman, The Office co-star Mindy Kaling said that she “couldn’t remember” if Carell would be in the finale or not. When pressed further, Kaling went on to say that she had signed a nondisclosure agreement and didn’t want to lie to Lettermam.
According to “sources” (take that as you will, I have yet to see a source named specifically) Carell will indeed be returning to the finale, but his presence will qualify as a cameo and not a full-fledged appearance.
Well, everyone will know for sure sooner or later. A little over a week to go until the final episode of The Office airs on NBC. The question is, can you wait it out to find out?
