Justina Machado, best known for her turn on Six Feet Under as Vanessa Diaz, has landed a new role in an upcoming ABC Family series.
Machado, who also recurred as Nurse Stephanie on the last season of Private Practice, will be joining the Jennifer Lopez-produced series as Sofia Rivera, an outspoken mother to Lexi Rivera (Bianca Santos), who is he best friend of Mariana Foster (Cierra Ramirez).
It is unknown the extent of the role or how long it will last - at this point, Machado is appearing in at least two episodes.
The Fosters deals with two mothers (played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum) who raise a mixed family of foster and biological children.
Jake T. Austin, Hayden Byerly, David Lambert, Maia Mitchell and Danny Nucci co-star in the series, which was created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige.
In addition to her work on Private Practice and Six Feet Under, Machado has also appeared in Switched at Birth, Desperate Housewives, ER and Ugly Betty. She recently appeared in the feature film The Call.
