Nothing is official at this point in time, but word has leaked out that Christina Aguilera is negotiating with NBC about returning to The Voice, following a one-season absence.
Aguilera appeared in the first three seasons of the NBC singing competition series, but left (as did Cee Lo Green) prior to the most recent season. They were replaced by Shakira and Usher.
The ratings for The Voice took a tiny dip this season, dropping to an all-time low with the May 8 episode (which did a 2.7 rating with adults - the lowest ever for a non-recap show). Still, that was enough to beat American Idol's during the head-to-head hour.
Shakira and Usher have been well received as coaches, so will Aguilera bump one of them or will Blake Shelton or Adam Levine be leaving? Levine did recently sign a developmental deal with NBC, so maybe it is his turn to sit out a year or so.
Mark Burnett, who produces the program, did say before the fourth season that coaches could take time off, as he understood they had other commitments as artists.
“These are current touring artists, so it’s a matter of balancing schedules,” he said. “They’re all in demand and we’re just balancing it all.”
