With the trailer for "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." generating plenty of anticipation for the new series, actor Clark Gregg spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the new series and Agent Coulson's resurrection.
Gregg promises that the ABC series will carry just the same excitement and dynamic effects as viewers have seen in Marvel's slate of films. "Marvel has such a lock on how to do really incredible visual effects and stunts that we’ve got stuff on our show that I just don't think we've seen on TV before," he said.
As for viewers who are scratching their heads wondering how the presumably deceased Coulson could return from certain death, the actor admitted he was just as surprised as anyone.
"I thought they were pranking me a little bit because there was so much blood on the set of 'The Avengers,'" said Gregg. "I kept waiting to see, are we going to shoot a version where [Loki] misses?"
He continued, "I was really surprised to get that call [for the ABC series] and I wanted to make sure it didn’t do anything to undermine what we achieved there and when [writer-director Joss Whedon] explained the mystery and how they planned to deal with [Coulson's return], I was very sold."
As for how the intelligence agent is revived, Gregg could only tease, "He's back. He thinks he knows how he's back. We'll have to see."
The key phrase here is "he thinks he knows," which could suggest a potential mystery to play out during the series. Personally, I'm hopeful that Coulson will be the television version of Marvel's The Vision character, a synthetic humanoid who served as a member of The Avengers for some time.
How do you think the character will be brought back?
