Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Joey and Phoebe. These six characters entered our lives in 1994, and thankfully remained there for 10 years. From marriages to pregnancies to coffee at Central Perk, this group of friends truly became friends to avid fans. Let’s see where the New York City gang is at today.
1. Character: Rachel Green
Actress: Jennifer Aniston
For 10 years she stole hearts as Rachel Green on the small screen, but now Jennifer Aniston continues making a name for herself on the big screen. When “Friends” ended in 2004, Aniston quickly jumped into movies including “Derailed,” “Rumor Has It” and “The Break-Up.” Most recently she’s starred in “Wanderlust,” “Horrible Bosses” and “The Switch.” She has also dabbled in some TV starring alongside her real-life and “Friends” best friend, Courteney Cox, in “Dirt” and “Cougar Town.” Aniston also hasn’t been shy to make headlines when it comes to her relationships. After her marriage with Brad Pitt ended in 2005, she dated Vince Vaughn, John Mayer and is now engaged to actor Justin Theroux.
2. Character: Monica Geller
Actress: Courteney Cox
After playing obsessive clean freak Monica Geller, Courteney Cox tried out drama with the series “Dirt,” but that didn’t work out for her. She then starred in several movies, including “Scream 4” where she reprised the role of Gale Weathers-Riley. In 2009, she returned to her comedy roots and can now be seen as the leading lady in TBS’ “Cougar Town.” Also in 2009, Cox reunited with former “Friends” co-star Lisa Kudrow in the comedy, “Web Therapy.” She’s been in and out of the spotlight ever since “Friends,” but one thing that’s kept her in the limelight is her supportive relationship with ex-husband David Arquette and their daughter, Coco. During Arquette’s appearance on “Dancing with the Stars,” Cox and Coco were repeatedly spotted on the sidelines cheering for him.
3. Character: Phoebe Buffay
Actress: Lisa Kudrow
The “Friends” audience misses Lisa Kudrow portraying eccentric Phoebe Buffay, but luckily fans can still catch on her on TV. In 2008, Kudrow made her comeback in the online improvised comedy “Web Therapy,” where she plays Dr. Fiona Wallice. Then, in 2012 Showtime picked up the series to be broadcast on TV. The third season debuts Monday, July 22 where Kudrow will be joined by a slew of actors and actresses including Steve Carell, Billy Crystal, Chelsea Handler, Megan Mullally and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, to name a few. Regarding her personal life, she’s been married for 18 years and has one son, Julian.
4. Character: Joey Tribbiani
Actor: Matt LeBlanc
Right after the comedy ended, LeBlanc reprised his role as Italian actor Joey Tribbiani on the “Friends” spinoff “Joey.” In the short-lived series, Joey moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. Despite his lack of success with the comedy, LeBlanc bounced back to the TV world in 2011 with Showtime’s “Episodes.” Funnily enough, LeBlanc plays himself. He’s been praised for the role, and even took home a Golden Globe in 2011 for the part. “Episodes” also reunited LeBlanc with producer David Crane, who co-wrote/produced/created “Friends.”
5. Character: Chandler Bing
Actor: Matthew Perry
Matthew Perry rocked the part of Chandler Bing. Could he BE any funnier? Yes, his role on “Friends” showed off his acting and comedic talents, but unfortunately Perry hasn’t found much success on the small screen. Since the ending of the NBC series, he’s had lead roles in “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” “Mr. Sunshine” and “Go On,” which was just canceled. Perry just can’t catch a break. On a good note, Perry fans have been loving him as Chicago attorney Mike Kresteva on the CBS hit “The Good Wife.”
6. Character: Ross Geller
Actor: David Schwimmer
What didn’t “Friends” fans love about Ross Geller? From his extra white teeth to his super dark tan to his leather pants, Ross got into all sorts of predicaments. That’s definitely not so for David Schwimmer. After the series end, Schwimmer took on roles behind the camera, rather than remaining in front, with the exception of starring alongside Kudrow in “Web Therapy” for four episodes. Kids know and love for his voice as Melman in “Madagascar,” but adults love him for producing the TV movie “Nevermind Nirvana,” for directing episodes of “Little Britain” and also directing the movie “Run, Fatboy, Run.” If that’s not exciting enough, in 2010 he married Zoe Buckman. He is also dad to daughter Cleo.
