Former Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera may be returning to ABC, but this time she would be behind the camera. Ferrera’s Romeo & Juliet inspired telenovela project, Pedro & Maria, is currently in development at the network and it has potential to become a limited series. Pedro & Maria was originally developed by the folks over at MTV three years ago, but following the announcement earlier this week at ABC’ upfront presentation that the network is seeking out limited series projects for the summer, it could find a new home at ABC.
Executive produced by Ben Silverman (The Office, The Biggest Loser) Pedro & Maria is a modern day Romeo & Juliet story. Here is the official pitch: “Pedro and Maria are two opposites cut from the same cloth caught in the trap of forbidden love. He is a second generation Dominican from the mean streets of Washington Heights. She is a Puerto Rican whose parents made millions as real estate developers. It’s a clash of the haves and the have-nots, of Main St vs. Wall St, set against a volatile cultural backdrop that fiercely believes neither side should mix with the other.”
The series was originally going to offer a new interactive experience to viewers, that is, audience members would have the ability to vote and decide the fate of characters on the show, much like they do for shows like American Idol. Plot twists, characters and story lines could be decided by the fans. It is not clear whether or not the project still intends to include this option, but either way, Pedro & Maria could be a good choice for the network to bring in viewers this summer during the hiatus for drama’s like Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.
