BBC officially confirmed, via their blog, that Doctor Who has been commissioned for an eighth season! The show’ lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat took to the blog to break the news, saying, “We’re delighted to confirm a new series of Doctor Who has been commissioned,” and added that they were “already plotting a brand new run of adventures for the Doctor.”
In addition to this good news, Matt Smith has also been confirmed to return for the upcoming season as The Doctor. Fans can breathe easy that they won’t have to go through a heart wrenching goodbye for at least one more season, contrary to some worrisome statements that Smith has made in the past. “I couldn’t do this for seven years. I’d be run into the ground. I don’t think you can sustain it…” Smith told Empire Magazine in the past.
Despite his previous misgivings, Smith is definitely on board for with the series for now. “We come back and shoot the Christmas special over the summer, then we go on to the next series, which will either start filming at the end of this year or at the start of 2014,” Matt recently said.
Until then, fans still have the 50th anniversary special to look forward to, slated to air on November 23rd. Are you happy to hear that The Doctor will be returning to television for another season?
