Earlier this pilot season, FX generated a lot of buzz when it was announced that Ang Lee would be following up his Oscar Award-winning film The Life of Pi with a pilot for the network called Tyrant.
Easy come, easy go.
Lee has pulled out of the pilot, which is a drama being developed by Homeland's Howard Gordon, Gideon Raff and Six Feet Under's Craig Wright.
"It is one of the most brilliant ideas for a series that I’ve seen and one about which I was very excited. However, after spending over four years making and promoting Life of Pi, I have recently realized that I need some rest," said Lee. "Because I cannot give 100 percent to this exciting project at this time, I cannot allow myself to do anything that may affect the potential for this exciting new series."
Tyrant revolves around an American family that lives in a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. The pilot is scheduled to shoot in a variety of locations, including Morocco.
Does Lee leaving change your interest in this at all? Personally, this plot sounds interesting enough that I would probably check it out regardless of who the director is. Obviously Lee would have been a get for FX, but I think it will survive.
