The Walking Dead has been criticized by some as a series that prioritizes moneymaking over creativity. And while that's a highly debatable statement, you can't disagree that it has the teensiest bit of truth to it, particularly after this news: Hyundai has upped its sponsorship deal with The Walking Dead, meaning that we'll see even more of the manufacturer's cars in this fall's upcoming fourth season.
That green Hyundai Tucson is a rather prominent part of the series, almost to the point of comedy (you've got to admit, it's not at all the type of car that characters like Shane looked comfortable driving). The Tucson, somewhat improbably, has survived months into the zombie apocalypse undamaged -- and you can bet that's intentional. Here's something else you might not have known: the deal with Hyundai makes sure that the Tucson will never be shown as being smeared with zombie blood or breaking down.
And while the strangely clean Tucson isn't THAT distracting, things are sure to get a little suspicious when more and more Hyundais pop up next year as part of the manufacturer's new deal with AMC. Models like the Veloster and Elantra are expected to pop up in the upcoming season, while a tie-in with writer Robert Kirkman is also planned.
But Hyundai insists that we won't have to suspend too much disbelief -- the new model of Santa Fe won't be a part of The Walking Dead's fourth season: “While we’d like to have them find a Santa Fe in the post-apocalyptic world on the show where there is no car production, it’s hard to imagine them doing that,” Hyundai CMO Steve Shannon told Forbes.
I'm not too bothered by the product placement in The Walking Dead; I've seen much worse (I'm looking at YOU, Heroes). But now, it's going to be tough to see that spotless Hyundai in The Walking Dead without cracking a grin.
