FX and Billy Crystal - not exactly the first network you would expect the funny man to tie his horse to, but it is happening. Crystal has signed a pilot deal with the cable channel to star in The Comedians. The comedy series will feature a veteran comic (Crystal) teaming up (against his better judgment) with a younger comedian with a bit more bite. The two (the younger comic has not been signed yet) will team up on a late-night comedy sketch series to attempt to bring the funny.
The project is based on a Swedish format with the same name. It will be a single camera comedy and is being developed by Larry Charles, Matt Nix and Ben Wexler. They will be writing and executive producing the pilot, as will Crystal.
“It truly is an honor to be in business with Billy Crystal and Larry Charles, two of the all-time greats in comedy,” said FX Networks president John Landgraf. “We have also wanted for some time to be in business with Matt Nix, who has done such an amazing job creating and running Burn Notice. They, along with Ben Wexler, are an unbeatable team and we’re incredibly excited about this project.”
