With no more American Idol to contend with this season, ABC and CBS split the Wednesday victory.
The season finale of The Middle rose a single tenth, and matched last year's sign-off. Conversely, the fourth season finale of Modern Family actually dropped a tenth, easily becoming the lowest rated finale in series history. How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life) actually rose two tenths, which really makes me question ABC's wisdom in cancelling it so early. The season finale of Nashville was up two tenths, and scored the series' best demos since January.
The two-hour Criminal Minds finale was up a tenth from last week for CBS, but down nearly an entire ratings point from last year. Ouch. Dateline rose a tenth for NBC. Law & Order: SVU's finale was up slightly from last week, but way down from last year. That seems to be a recurring trend for this season's finales. The season finale of Chicago Fire actually dropped three tenths from last week. I'm pretty surprised by that actually. It's not common for a drama finale to drop to that degree. The season premiere of FOX'S MasterChef was down three tenths from last season's debut. A second episode managed to climb up two tenths from there.
