Full 2012-2013 Broadcast Ratings Report, Find Out Which Shows Landed Where

The Following

Nielsen has released the full rankings for the recently ended 2012-2013 broadcast season. I figured you guys and gals might be interested, so I've taken the info and compiled a few lists of what shows won specific categories of TV. This is purely informational, do with it what you choose. For the record, the highest rated new shows of the season were The Following (demos), and Elementary (totals).

Notes: I chose not to include sports programming in the list below, as those dominate every year, and everyone expects them to. Also, since I put together similar lists last year, the number in parentheses is where a show ranked in that category for the 2011-2012 season. Another thing to keep in mind is that these rankings are (basically) averages, so if a show aired fewer episodes, its placement can sometimes skew upward due to having less chances to fail.

The only cancellations I don't approve of are Golden Boy and Last Resort. Although I get how it might have been hard to sell Last Resort. I initially had to force myself to give it a try as well, since I've had stupid military shows up to my neck and I couldn't stand another. It was not very clear that the show was going to be more than that. Sadly, it would have been but didn't get the chance to.

The others are mostly proof that good ratings doesn't mean something is a good show. Otherwise, how would you explain The Big Bang Theory still bringing in these numbers while it hasn't been really funny since season 2...

The CW is a very teen-oriented network, much of their audience is of an age with a very limited spending budget of their own. Nikita was more or less the channel's only "cross-over" show that had a considerable audience in higher age groups where people are much more interesting to market to. So even if it might have less viewers in absolute numbers than other shows, its audience might have been on average more valuable to advertisers.

Also, it's been renewed but only for a quarter-season to wrap-up the story. So it's sort of in between half a renewal, and a postponed cancellation. I really like how they do that though, I wish more networks would have the decency to let authors wrap up their plots and audiences enjoy a conclusion. It would probably pay off in increased viewer loyalty.

You'd have to cross reference the costs to make a show vs the ratings to get a complete picture. Then again, having shows make a "top 20 new series" list and still get cancelled makes no sense (specially Vegas, being #2 on this list, and consistently doing better than other shows that got renewed in other lists).

I imagine that even when you take costs into account, many times it goes to show that they have no idea what they're doing, and that the renewal decision making process is broken. They want every show to mean something to every demographic, and if one doesn't fit this mold, it gets canned. Vegas is a good example. Traditional TV viewers are getting older (as reported here), likely because younger viewers are being pulled away by alternate media (or are watching shows online), but a show that appeals to older viewers (and has good overall ratings) gets canned because it likely doesn't test well with Millennials. Yet given time, it might even make inroads amongst younger viewers.  In the end, it's self-fulfilling: viewership will continue to erode because you can get vested on new shows because they will likely go away before you even get into them (Chaos anyone?), or you won't get a satisfying resolution.

I've been wondering about Nikita since day one, and I'm still wondering!

They might be taking video sales into account- Nikita's got two seasons out on disc and they've sold a bunch of copies.  That's probably worth something to Warner- but, again, doesn't help their ad revenue for CW/Paramount.  Maybe they get it cheaper since they don't have a production stake in it (unlike Emily Owens).

I get what you're saying AB, but the reason I consider it inexplicable is that Nikita's numbers were some of the worst on the CW. Emily Owens M.D. did better numbers than Nikita, yet still got the axe.

Why did Last Resort get canned when they will renew tripe like New Girl.

Nikita's not inexplicable- it's CW.  I actually haven't watched this season yet (it's on the TiVo awating me), so I can't really comment on how it is, but the CW has less coverage than the other nets (so the numbers are always smaller, overall), and their advertising make me wonder if they weigh response on social media more than ratings.  Not sure that makes sense from an ab-buy perspective, which is all ratings are about, but could be.
