'Girls' creator fumes over porn parody

It seems like every show has gotten its own porn parody these days, from the 1960s "Batman" to "The Big Bang Theory," so it was only a matter of time before a certain feminist HBO series got the same treatment.

Lena Dunham

Unfortunately, Lena Dunham, creator and star of HBO's "Girls," is not finding the humor in the upcoming release of Hustler's "This Ain't Girls XXX."

Dunham at least attempted to shrug off the parody, but took to Twitter to vent her frustrations. "I wish I had a better attitude about the Girls porn parody," she wrote. "I really can never predict what will trouble me and it's simply exhausting."

She continued, going on to list three reasons why she cannot simply "laugh off" the film, some more understandable than others. "1. Because Girls is, at its core, a feminist action while Hustler is a company that markets and monetizes a male's idea of female sexuality," Dunham wrote, perhaps forgetting that she has done media in chauvinist and objectifying publications like Playboy in the past.

Her second point is certainly a viable complaint, considering the awkward frankness and reality with which the HBO series tackles the subject of real sex versus the ideals of men that are played out in porn films. As Dunham pointed out in her Tweet, "2. Because a big reason I engage in (simulated) onscreen sex is to counteract a skewed idea of that act created by the proliferation of porn."

Finally, she said, "3. Because it grosses me out." Can't argue with that.

With HBO you just never know what's happening behind the curtains so to speak. What is it that gets a super successfull series cancelled (hello Carnivale, Deadwood) and what keeps 'em on air. With most networks there is some kind of transparency and things usually make sense if you look at the bigger picture (excluding stupid timeslot allocations) but with HBO ? One would think the pope himself got Carnivale axed (which in fact isn't that far from the truth afaik). They seem to be subject to a lot of outside interference and influence when it comes to programming descisions. Oh, and just for the record ... I find those porn parodies (alongside most american porn productions) simply disgusting.

I'd rather watch the porn parody than Dunham's crap. Hell, even my wife hates that show.
