Showtime has given a popular dark comedy a sixth season, which will premiere in 2014.
“Nurse Jackie,” a co-production of Showtime and Lionsgate, stars Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton, an uncompromising and genius (though not without her faults) ER nurse.
Clyde Phillips (“Dexter”) will return for his second season as showrunner, and be joined by fellow executive producers Caryn Mandabach, Richie Jackson and Tom Straw.
"Nurse Jackie is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series’ growth in its fifth season,” David Nevins, President of Entertainment, said. “Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.”
Falco has previously won an Emmy for her role.
Merritt Wever, Paul Schulze, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Deavere Smith and Peter Facinelli also star. Bobby Cannavale, Morris Chestnut, Stephen Wallem, Betty Gilpin and Adam Ferrara are season five guest stars.
Season five is averaging 3.1 million weekly viewers, a 10 percent increase from season four to five.
Season five’s finale will air June 16. Production on season six starts in New York this fall.
