'Last Resort' creator Karl Gajdusek developing sci-fi show at HBO

Gajdusek

Deadline is reporting that HBO is moving forward with 'The Spark,' a sci-fi drama series from Karl Gajdusek, the creator of 'Last Resort.'

Gajdusek is the creator and executive producer of 'Last Resort,' which lasted for a single season on ABC. Gajdusek wrote all thirteen episodes of the series, along with the screenplay for the feature film 'Oblivion' which was released this year. With two more of his feature screenplays in development, Gajdusek is a very hot commodity at the moment--and it seems that HBO is looking to buy stock in this hit writer's future.

'The Spark' is set in a world undergoing a technological revolution which is then contacted by a mysterious signal from beyond the reaches of our solar system. It centers on the human reaction to a mystery still spiritually and technologically out of reach and follows a female protagonist as she works on the cusp of the Earth’s effort to discover the origin of the signal. Gajdusek is writing and executive producing the potential series, which seems to have a lot of support over at HBO.

Gajdusek promises that 'The Spark' will explore what he considers to be the five pillars of science-fiction: Alien Contact, Artificial Intelligence, Technological breakthroughs, Space Exploration/Adventure, and Origin Stories.

After the success of 'Game of Thrones,' it seems that HBO is finally re-entering the business of genre television. Who would you like to see cast as the female lead character in 'The Spark?'

I miss Last Resort too - I could have seen it run another couple of seasons, but when I read ABC was canceling it and allowing it to come to "a natural ending" I knew it was over. I"d love to see Evangeline Lilly from Lost in this role, but then again I'd love to see her just about any time. Jessica Alba could play a more mature version of her character from Dark Angel too, but there just seems to be a lack of philosophical and intellectual angles in both of those roles to really push for either. Olivia Wilde could probably pull it off. If a more mature actress is called for, Angels Basset has great acting chops and sci-fi boa fides.

It's been dead for a long time m8.Going through my favorice actresses none of them seems to be good fit. Jamie Ray-Newman, nope, Michelle Ryan, nope, Jerry Ryan, nope, Dana Delany ...mmmhhh ... maybe ... actually ... hmm, yeah maybe maybe, Terry Hatcher ... newp. Very much depends on the tone of the show. What's the name of that actress that was on Lost, V and I believe Revolution again ? Elizabeth something or other ... she seems to be a decent fit for the serious leading scientis type. She's almost a bit of a stereotype for these roles.

I was hoping "Last Resort" would get picked up by another network. Guess this mean it's dead.
