An Oscar-nominated actor has been cast as the co-lead of a buzz-worthy FX drama pilot.
John Hurt will star opposite Corey Stoll and Mia Maestro in “The Strain,” which comes from Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse (“Lost”). It is an adaptation of a vampire novel trilogy by del Toro.
Hurt will play Professor Abraham Setrakian, a holocaust survivor who runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. He may have answers as the outbreak speads, but needs someone to listen.
“I am incredibly happy to be reunited with John, who is one of the greatest actors in the world and one of my favorite people ever,” del Toro said in a statement. “Chuck and I always visualized him while writing The Strain novels and he is absolutely perfect for the part!”
“The Strain” has a pilot order, but there are designs for a 13-episode series pickup. “The Strain” tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (played by Stoll, “House of Cards”), head of the Centers for Disease Control canary team in New York City who is investigating an outbreak reminiscent of a strain of vampirism.
Kevin Durand, Richard Sammel, Lauren Lee Smith, Jonathan Hyde and Miguel Gomez also appear in “The Strain.”
Hurt appeared in “The Elephant Man” and “Midnight Express,” and was Ollivander in the “Harry Potter” series. He also played Warren Christopher in “Recount” on HBO, and previously worked with del Toro on “Hellboy” in 2004.
