Comedy Central Greenlights ‘The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail'
Comedy Central has announced the decision to greenlight ‘The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail.’ Friends Jonah Ray (‘Nerdist Podcast’) and Kumail Nanjiani (‘Portlandia,’ ‘Burning Love’) will host the show. Ben Stiller’s Red Hour will produce.
The show will shoot performances in the back of a comic shop, Meltdown Comics, on Sunset Boulevard in L.A. The non-televised show already runs weekly at the venue. To date they have featured comics such as: Donald Glover, Ed Helms, Aziz Ansari, Robin Williams, Louie CK, Jeff Ross, David Spade, and Marc Maron.
Persistence pays off for Ray, as Comedy Central turned down his comedy pilot proposal ‘Jonah’s Arcade’ in 2011.
Nonetheless, both comics have had much success with the cult following garnered by the venue. It showcases both emerging comics finding their voice, as well as established comics looking to tinker with new material.
The alternative venue may add a little something different to traditional stand-up shows performed in bars and small clubs. In addition to showing stand-up performances, the show promises moments where Jonah and Kumail will go "backstage"--inside the comicbook storefront--to talk with performers.
The aim is for the show to feature the hottest comics on the scene. Let’s hope we get to see guys like Mike Lawrence and Hannibal Buress included in this group.
