This right here is the comedy show I am most looking forward to this summer. As a long-time fan of 'Drunk History' videos on Funny or Die, when I heard that Comedy Central was turning the hilarious history sessions into a series I was giddy. What makes me even giddier is this image of Kristen Wiig as Patty Hearst.
If you are unfamiliar with the ‘Drunk History’ format, the show follows a very basic premise. Find a comic, get them rip-roaring drunk, have them tell the story of a “historical event” and film the entire thing. Oh, and each historical re-telling is re-enacted by a cast of celebrities that include individuals like Michael Cera, Jack Black, Winona Ryder and, now, Kristen Wiig. In Wiig’s episode, which will show some time in August, comedian Natasha Leggero drinks an exorbitant amount of liquor and narrates the true story of kidnapped heiress and bank robber Patty Hearst.
"Kristen played it in a way that will bring light to such a dark story,” says ‘Drunk History’ host and co-creator Derek Waters. “When Natasha came to set, she didn’t know what was going on. We got the pretty identical set to what the SLA [the Symbionese Liberation Army, which kidnapped Hearst in 1974] had in San Francisco and she just sees Kristen Wiig talking to herself using Natasha’s drunk voice in a corner. It’s got to be the weirdest thing for them.”
If you haven’t yet seen any of the previous ‘Drunk History’ videos online, you should check them out here before you watch the show. The videos are a guaranteed laugh for any history buff out there who doesn’t mind slightly offensive language, heavy drinking and historical inaccuracies.
