Showtime Hopes Californication Fans Will Have Faith In A Spin-Off

Hank Moody

The critically acclaimed and highly rated sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll filled saga of writer Hank Moody just recently closed out its fifth season with a bang, but is reporting that Showtime has no plans to rest on the franchise's laurels any time soon.

Californication creator and executive producer Tom Kapinos has created a new character that will be heavily featured next season, and the plan is to then spin-off that character into her own series. Her name is Faith, she's in her mid-20s, and she is described as somewhat of a "professional groupie", but at the same time is still very committed to her religious beliefs. Producers say she is "what happens when an innocent young Catholic school girl is exposed to the evils of rock and roll and falls heads over heels in love with the music and the men who make it." Faith spends her days and nights on the road with various prominent bands, and serves as a kind of creative muse for them.

The character is obviously not in any way guaranteed to connect with audiences, and only if she succeeds with viewers will we see her further adventures on a small screen near us. Faith is currently scripted to appear in 9 of the 12 sixth season episodes, which are tentatively scheduled to begin airing in early 2013. This strategy is rather unique as usually when executives create a character specifically with a spin-off in mind, that character will be introduced with a "backdoor pilot" in which the episode focuses almost entirely on them and pushes the usual protagonist to the periphery. The goal here is to make Faith as natural a part of the Californication universe as possible, and not for her to attempt to overshadow Hank, Karen, Becca and the rest of the regulars.

Are you interested in this Californication spin-off idea? Would you rather an existing character like Charlie or Marcy get one instead? Or would you prefer a show about Faith from Buffy more than any of this stuff?
