'Game of Thrones' season 3 DVD release date announced; vote on your favorite alternate cover

The third season of HBO's 'Game of Thrones' was the show's most intense yet, but if you're looking to rewatch the season anytime soon, you better get HBO Go -- it was announced this week that the complete third season won't be hitting DVD until February 18, 2014.

No real surprises there, of course: 'Game of Thrones' DVDs are usually released about a month and a half before the premiere of the next season (and our money is on a March 30, 2014 premiere for season 4).

The official 'Game of Thrones' Facebook has revealed a low-resolution version of the season 3 artwork, and like the key art it features, it's a little boring. The grey shadow of the dragon on the grey-white background just isn't visually striking. The case appears to be embossed with three swords, but those only seem to emphasize the plainnness of the cover overall.

Don't worry, though: if you pick up the series at Best Buy, you'll be given a choice of some alternate covers. Don't get too excited, though, especially if you've already been picking up the Best Buy editions of previous seasons.

There are three potential groups of alternate covers being voted upon. The first group features the faces of Tyrion, Jon Snow, and Daenerys, which are pretty striking, if exclusionary.

The second group is the most colorful, featuring the crests of Houses Tyrell, Baratheon (Stannis's altered sigil), and Tully. They're really quite colorful and interesting -- it's tough for me to decide which of them I like the best (I like my DVD shelf to have some colorful variety).

The third group, though, is currently winning, despite the fact that the sigils it features have already been Best Buy DVD covers before: House Stark, House Lannister, and House Targaryen. It's winning the contest by a significant margin, which is a little disappointing. The lesser houses (and greater variety) get no love.

Head over to Facebook and like the image you prefer to place your vote.

'Game of Thrones' season 4 premieres next spring.

And they wonder why it's gets pirated so much. I don't understand why they leave it until the following year to sell the DVD/BD every time.
