In 1978, Universal Pictures released 'Jaws 2' with the tagline "just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water..." Well the tagline for Syfy's upcoming original tv movie 'Sharknado' could read "just when you thought it was safe to go friggin' anywhere..."
In the schlocky vein of 2010's 'Sharktopus' and 2012's 'Piranhaconda,' 'Sharknado' is a tongue-in-cheek horror movie event that is about... well, precisely what it sounds like. A 'Sharknado' is what happens when a massive tornado sucks several sharks up into the sky, flinging them randomly throughout Los Angeles, California. Just how do the sharks survive the trip through the skies? What do they do when they land in strange, LA locales? Well you'll just have to tune in to Syfy on July 11 to find out, won't you?
'Sharknado' is written by Thunder Levin, the celebrated scribe behind such films as 'Mutant Vampire Zombies from the 'Hood!' and the upcoming knock-off of 'Pacific Rim,' aptly titled 'Atlantic Rim.' 'Sharknado' was helmed by make-up-artist-turned-director Anthony C. Ferrante and stars Tara Reid ('American Pie') and Ian Ziering ('Beverly Hills, 90210'). Reid and Ziering play a divorced couple who team up in order to investigate the sharknado phenomenon in Los Angeles. Reid plays April and Ziering plays Fin, a bar owner who is investigating flying sharks for some reason.
As the Hollywood feature film 'Snakes on a Plane' proved, there is always a market for a goofy blend of comedy and horror. There is something relaxing about tuning in for a gore-fest that you know isn't trying to change your life: it's just trying to entertain you for a couple of hours. Expect 'Sharknado' to perform better than it has any right to.
'Sharknado' will debut on July 11 at 9:00pm EST on Syfy.
