After a long audition process, Starz has found their Jamie Fraser for the upcoming adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's hit 'Outlander' series of novels. The man to win the part is thirty-three year old Scottish actor Sam Heughan.
News of the casting comes with some confusion; it was reported last Friday on the Starz official twitter feed that Heughan was the man for the job, however that tweet was proven premature. The initial tweet read "It's #FollowFriday here at #STARZ. Follow Sam Heughan (@Heughan) who will play the role of Jamie Fraser in #OutlanderSTARZ. #FF." Shortly afterwards, this tweet was deleted and a press agent for Starz admitted that no contract had been signed. However, the press agent added "saw @Heughan audition tapes. #jawdrop," making it seem like Starz remained very much interested in bringing the Scotsman aboard this new project.
Finally, Starz made it official again today. Diana Gabaldon showed her feelings about the decision, announcing on twitter "I am UTTERLY delighted to confirm that Sam @Heughan is cast as Jamie Fraser in #Outlander_STARZ #Outlander." Ron Moore, executive producer for the 'Outlander' series, followed up with a statement saying "from the very beginning, I knew the part of Jamie Fraser would be difficult to cast. I had no one in mind for the part. I knew that someone would just come into the audition and be Jamie Fraser. And that’s what Sam did."
Heughan hit it big in the UK with his role in the 2007 TV movie 'A Very British Sex Scandal.' He also starred on the BBC series 'Doctors' in 2009. The role of Jamie Fraser is by far the biggest boon to Heughan's career to date.
Mixing romance, science fiction, history, and adventure, the seven-book 'Outlander' series of novels by Diana Gabaldon has sold over 20,000,000 copies worldwide. Starz ordered at least sixteen episodes of an adaptation of the novels, with Ron Moore ('Battlestar Galactica') helming the project. Production of 'Outlander' is expected to begin in Scotland this fall.
