Listen: do you hear that? It is the sound of countless ‘Parenthood’ fans cheering in joy and relief! Matt Lauria, who plays the somewhat troubled, but entirely loveable, Ryan on the NBC series ‘Parenthood,’ is returning for the drama’s fifth season! Everyone do your happy dance!
Ryan, who began his run on ‘Parenthood’ as an Army vet who sought friendship and guidance (and found it in the unlikely form of Zeek) went through a tumultuous relationship with the equally troubled Amber (Mae Whitman) early in Season 4. After a split that had the couple seeking time apart, and fans like myself waiting anxiously for the reconciliation, the couple seemed headed for a brighter future together during the season finale.
Lauria has been signed on to appear in at least half of season five’s upcoming 22-episode run. Considering the original plan for Lauria’s character, this is a high episode order. Executive producer Jason Katims says that they never actually expected Ryan to stick around very long on the show. "Sometimes you do a story and what you started out thinking would be a three or four-episode arc — you realize how rich it is and that's how we felt watching this story," he said back in January. "They have a real chemistry, and also that story is very charged with Ryan's backstory and what he's going through and how it almost mirrors Sarah and her ex-husband's relationship."
Is a full out Ryan and Amber reconciliation in our future? I sure hope so. Are you glad to hear that Lauria is returning for season five of ‘Parenthood’?
