Well, this is a tad surprising. Just when it seemed that NBC couldn't get enough of 91-year-old comedy legend Betty White, the ol' Peacock has opted to cancel her prank series 'Off Their Rockers.' For those unfamiliar, 'Off Their Rockers' featured a troupe of elderly men and women that played practical jokes on unsuspecting young people. The premise was certainly a unique spin on the standard hidden camera prank show. After all, who's going to suspect that they're being fooled by a senior citizen?
The inaugural season premiered following the first special celebrating White's 90th birthday; initially, 'Off Their Rockers' did quite well in the ratings. Unfortunately, 2013's second season has seen the numbers plummet down to depths in the 18-49 demographic. The show literally lost half its audience in season two. In that respect, it's not hard to see why the plug was pulled. What makes the move a little unexpected is just how much Betty has done for NBC in the last few years. Her 2010 appearance as host of 'Saturday Night Live' set records. She received an Emmy nomination for her work hosting the first season of 'Off Their Rockers.' Both of her 90th birthday specials did well for the network. Way to show a lady some gratitude, NBC.
Fans of Ms. White shouldn't mourn the loss of 'Off Their Rockers' for too long; everybody's favorite foul-mouthed grandmother can still be seen weekly on the hit TV Land sitcom 'Hot In Cleveland.' I only caught a few episodes of 'Rockers' myself, but what I saw seemed funny enough. I worry not for Betty White though. She'll bounce back. She always does.
