James Franco Joins ‘The Mindy Project’ as New Doctor

James Franco is embracing his comedy roots by joining the second season of the hit FOX comedy ‘The Mindy Project,’ the series announced today on its Facebook page.

It looks like Franco will be “replacing” Mindy Kaling’s title character, Dr. Mindy Lahiri. Before fans freak out, it’s only for a short time while Mindy is off exploring and healing patients in Haiti with boyfriend Pastor Casey (Anders Holm).

Franco’s guest-starring character, named Dr. Paul Leotard, is described as “the charismatic and popular doctor who replaces Mindy at Shulman & Associates while she is in Haiti on a volunteer mission. A former professional fashion model, Dr. Leotard radically altered his career goals after he accidentally walked off a runway at fashion week and was saved by a pregnant woman. From that day forward, he devoted himself to helping pregnant women and immediately applied to medical school.”

Sounds like he’ll fit right in at Mindy’s office. I’m sure he’ll get into all kinds of shenanigans with Danny (Chris Messina), Morgan (Ike Barinholtz), Jeremy (Ed weeks) and everyone else.

Widely known for ‘127 Hours,’ ‘General Hospital,’ ‘Pineapple Express,’ among many other projects, Franco will appear in two episodes: the season premiere and the season’s second episode.

Are you excited to see Franco’s stint on the hilarious comedy?

‘The Mindy Project’ premieres Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013 at 9:30 p.m. on FOX.
