Shark week is really popular. Ghost movies are really popular, too. So it was only a matter of time until a movie about ghost sharks was created, right? Syfy seems to think so, as they are releasing 'Ghost Shark' as their next TV movie in late August.
'Ghost Shark' follows a long line of other classic films such as 'Shark Swarm', 'Sharktopus', 'Dinoshark', and 'Sharknado' - -which all are exactly what the titles say.
Thomas Vitale, the Executive Vice President of Programming for Syfy, says “It was inspired by something my 7-year-old daughter Ava said. She said, ‘Papa, you should make a movie called Ghost Monster.’” I imagine a dartboard with different Syfy monsters was used to decide on 'Ghost Shark'. “There is a logical reason in the movie for it to be a ghost shark,” he says. I can't wait to find out what that is!
If 'Ghost Shark' is anything like 'Sharknado' don't expect too much. 1.4 million people tuned in to watch sharks flying through Los Angeles, lower than Syfy's usual turnout for their movies. Despite the low ratings 'Sharknado' received a huge reaction from audiences on social media.
Will 'Ghost Shark' perform as well as 'Sharknado'? With a story that features a drunken sea captain, ghost hunter, a July 4th celebration and a phantom shark how could this movie not be a hit? As if sharks weren't scary enough, now I have to worry about them popping up in the bath.
Be sure to check out this summer blockbuster good for the whole family on August 22nd. Take a look at the trailer for 'Ghost Shark' below.
What do you think Syfy's next movie should be about? More sharks?
