The Hollywood Reporter has broken the story that Disney's series 'Shake it Up' will be coming to an end after three seasons. After an impressive seventy-eight episodes, the musical comedy starring Bella Thorne and Zendaya will close out its run on an upcoming date yet to be specified.
'Shake it Up' is about two best friends who fulfil their dreams of becoming background dancers in music videos and on television. CeCe (played by fifteen-year-old Bella Thorne) is an impulsive and street-smart girl. Her parents are divorced and she lives with her brother and mother. Rocky (played by Zendaya) is a sweet, well-meaning, book-smart girl whose heart belongs to dancing. The driving plot of many episodes of 'Shake it Up' features Rocky's attempts to keep CeCe out of trouble, which invariably backfire and make that trouble far worse.
News of 'Shake it Up's cancellation comes hot on the heels of Disney Channel cancelling 'Good Luck Charlie' after a four-season run. Both Rocky and CeCe appeared in an episode of 'Good Luck Charlie' as part of a crossover to promote 'Shake it Up' back in 2011. It seems that Disney is looking to overhaul its comedy block, however it is very interested in working with Thorne and Zendaya on further projects.
Zendaya's next project will keep her at Disney Channel, toplining a new original TV movie based on the novel 'Boys are Dogs.' Production on the TV Movie is slated to begin in August. Thorne will be appearing in the upcoming Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore feature film 'Blended.'
Disney's comedy block will be bolstered by 'Girl Meets World,' the sequel to the smash-hit 'Boy Meets World,' this autumn.
