'Orange is the New Black' is currently exceeding everyone's expectations on Netflix, earning critical acclaim and a legion of fans. The show was recently renewed for a second season and the news of just who may appear in that second season has been heating up. Lorraine Toussaint has just officially been added to the second season cast in what is being described as a "heavily recurring role." Even better, season one stand-out Danielle Brooks (who plays Taystee) has been promoted to a series regular.
News of Toussaint's casting and Brooks' promotion comes after Taryn Manning was officially promoted to series regular where she'll reprise her role as Tiffany “Pennsatucky” Doggett.
Fifty-three year-old Toussaint has recently been recurring on 'The Young and the Restless.' She has appeared in some hit feature films including 1995's 'Dangerous Minds' and 2009's 'The Soloist.' She is also currently recurring on 'The Fosters' on ABC Family. As of yet there is no word on what Toussaint's role will be on 'Orange is the New Black.'
Brooks has won fans over in the first season of 'Orange is the New Black' as Taystee, offering many memorable scenes and quotable lines. Brooks appeared in a TV Movie in 2012 entitled 'Modern Love' but 'Orange is the New Black' is Brooks' breakout role and her first recurring appearance. The fact that she has earned herself her first ever series regular role is a landmark for her career. She landed this role fresh out of Julliard's acting program.
'Orange is the New Black' has managed a blend of dark comedy with flashes of inspirational drama that is difficult to accomplish. Which other recurring characters from the first season would you like to see return for season two?
