Amanda Righetti, Owain Yeoman to Exit ‘The Mentalist’?

If you’re a fan of the CBS drama ‘The Mentalist,’ then you better brace yourself for this shocking news. Reportedly, Amanda Righetti, who plays Grace Van Pelt, and Owain Yeoman, who plays Wayne Rigsby, are leaving the series at the end of Season 6, according to TVLine.

Wait, what?! Yes, you read that right.

The two will say goodbye to the show toward the end of the season, and it will most likely have something to do with the Red John reveal. The unmasking will mark a major change for the series, along with setting the show on a new course.

‘The Mentalist’ creator, Bruno Heller, spoke with TVLine, but would “neither confirm or deny” Righetti and Yeoman’s departure. All Heller said is that this season is the “most dramatic and game changing season and anything can happen.”

It’s hard to imagine the show without Van Pelt and Rigsby, who are not only co-workers, but also soulmates. They’ve definitely had their ups and downs, and thankfully, the two found their way back to one another last season. Hopefully, the couple will have a happy ending.

Rather than leaving a void, the series is looking to cast two new series regulars, a male and a female, TVLine also revealed. Fans might have a hard time accepting the new characters -- and in my opinion, you can’t fill the Rigsby/Van Pelt void. These new characters will be introduced in early 2014.

Will you be sad to see Rigsby and Van Pelt leave the series?

It's a very welcome move as after all this time their acting still sucks and they remain the show's weakest links. Hope they recruit quality actors as there are so many good tv actors struggling to find work.

I would stop watching this show when they get rid of Rigsby and Vanpelt. So sick of Red John.

Why are these two characters being written out of the show? Did they want to leave or are they being dropped? I, for one, will miss both characters. E also think the "Red John" case has gone on long enough. But I do respect Heller's writing. I would like to see Van Pelt and Rigsby to leave because they want a "normal" family life rather than have "Red John" kill them off.

I couldn't have said it better than TheCthulhu. The folks that run the show need to look at the back story for Patrick. He has stated on many occasilons that when he gets Red John that he will be done and leave. So if they kill him, Patrick is gone. But if they only discover the true identity of RD but can't find him, that could be just the ticket to making the show viable for a few more seasons. Only time will tell. OH, and personaly I will miss Ananda & Owain should they leave the show.

They may as well end the show if they kill off Red John.  The Jane vs. Red John serial aspect to the show IS the entire show.  Without it, The Mentalist is just another procedural.  Rather than changing the show and letting it die a slow, painful death, they should either continue the Red John storyline until the end or end it with Red John being captured next season.  I get so sick of people who watch serials, then complain about the story dragging on.  That is what a serial IS!  If you don't like the serial aspect, go watch Criminal Minds or CSI.  Those of us who value a deep and ongoing story arch watch for that reason and do not want our show turned into a by-the-numbers procedural just because some people have a short attention span.

What would the show be without the storyline that has been driving it and motivating the main character since the beginning?  Every great character needs a nemesis.  Killing Jane's will kill the show - mark my words.  It will turn to garbage and peter out like so many that have undergone similar changes before it.  Can someone even name a show that has undergone a major change to the story arch like this and actually gotten better?  I can't.  X-Files - jumped the shark.  Dead Zone.......Human Target.......Sliders........The Net..........Profiler.........Millennium........just a few off the top of my head.  I can't recall a single show that was retooled and got better.  The Mentalist will be cancelled after one season wirthout the Red John storyline.  I'd bet on it.......

Yes, I would be sad to see Grace and Wayne leave the series. But I would be happy to have "Red John" get caught or killed. I can't believe that the writers could create a serial murdering scumbag who seems so "Omnipotent". I hope Patrick kills him in order to save Teresa.

With losing Van Pelt, I have no problem,  it's losing Rigsby is where the problem lies. Van Pelt left the show for like 2 months last season and I didn't miss her. Rigsby, on the other hand, is essential to the pace of the show. He's the Jerry Lewis to Cho's Dean Martin. But the thing is, he doesn't play it funny, and that what make it watchable. They are going to need a Strong actor to replace his timing.

It has been getting a bit 'Columbo' and lost its wit as well. They need to be less pedestrian and up the pace and perhaps put pressure on the relationship between Teresa and Jane.

I agree with n8ph8ts. This show, if it's to continue beyond the "Red John" storyline definitely needs an overhaul and some new blood. Loved the characters, but will not be sad to see them go. Just bring in some strong ones to replace them.

No not realy, the show needed a change, for me the "Red John" case as gone on far too long,so maybe they can sail off into the sunset once they have cought him or killed him..:=)
