I think that Showtime has something special on their hands, here.
The trailer for the upcoming period drama 'Masters of Sex' comes across like a funny, scientific version of 'Mad Men,' which is a very good thing. Starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, 'Masters of Sex' tells the story of real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters (Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Caplan), whose controversial scientific studies broke down the taboo of discussing sex in the scientific community. Remember the feature film 'Kinsey'? Well Masters & Johnson picked up where Kinsey left off, pioneering research into sexual response and the neuroscience of sexual pleasure.
As the hot new trailer depicts, 'Masters of Sex' will show the first meeting between William and Virgina, a duo who would eventually become world-famous. As Showtime describes the pair, "he is a brilliant scientist out of touch with his own feelings, and she is a single working mother ahead of her time. The series chronicles their unusual lives, romance, and unlikely pop culture trajectory."
Lizzy Caplan's television successes have come in the form of 'True Blood' and 'Party Down.' On the feature film side of things, Caplan appeared in the blockbuster monster mash 'Cloverfield.' As for Michael Sheen, he held a recurring television role on '30 Rock' for four episodes, but his history has spent spent on stage and the silver screen. Some of Sheen's most notable feature films include 'Kingdom of Heaven,' 'Blood Diamond' and 'Frost/Nixon.'
Oh, and in case the subject matter didn't give it away, the following trailer contains NSFW elements!!
What do you think? Will you be tuning into Showtime for 'Masters of Sex'?
