NBC has signed a prominent feature and television director to helm the ship on its upcoming pirate drama 'Crossbones.'
'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' and '30 Days of Night' director David Slade has agreed to direct the opening episode of the anticipated new series. This is not the director's first project with the network, as he has previously helmed episodes of criminally underappreciated 'Hannibal' and the short-lived dual life drama 'Awake.'
The series revolves around the Bahamian criminal paradise of New Providence in the year 1715, as infamous pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, reigns supreme. Keeping a hold of power is no easy task in a nation populated by thieves, murderers and other outlaws, and Blackbeard must contend with an assassination plot and other attempts to usurp his power.
While this is not the first high profile television project Slade has handled for the network, the pirate drama does have its share of firsts. John Malkovich ('Of Mice and Men,' 'In the Line of Fire') has already signed on for the lead role as Blackbeard, his first foray into series work after a lengthy career in film and theater. Additionally, 'Crossbones' will be the first US project for creator Neil Cross, who has garnered acclaim across the pond for his gritty detective series 'Luther.' Cross wrote the script for Slade's episode and will also serve as executive producer along with Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald ('Gladiator').
With the addition of Slade, 'Crossbones' is quickly shaping up to be a can't miss prospect for the coming season. Are you looking forward to this or Starz' similar upcoming series 'Black Sails' more?
