Laura Prepon Leaving Netflix's 'Orange Is the New Black'

Laura Prepon stands beside an 'Orange Is the New Black' poster

Here is something fans probably didn't see coming: one of the main stars of the Netflix hit original series 'Orange Is the New Black' will not be returning as a series regular when season two of the prison drama makes its comeback. Laura Prepon, who plays Piper's sometimes-girlfriend and fellow felon, has announced that she will only be returning to the drama for enough screen-time to wrap up her characters storyline.

No other details have been released yet about whether her decision to leave is based on creative differences with 'Orange Is the New Black' executive producer Jenji Kohan or if it is a personal decision not related to the series. Either way, the option for her to make a return to the series at a later date is apparently still on the table. "Our season is still developing and nothing is confirmed," said a Netflix representative in a statement.

As much as her character irked me throughout the entire first season, I really did not expect that she would be leaving the show so soon. I thought there would be a lot more Piper/Alex relationship drama to ensue in the coming seasons. I think that Alex's storyline is flexible enough that they could write out her character in a number of ways that wouldn't feel forced. [Warning: Spoiler] After the events of the season finale it is entirely possible that Alex could be transferred to a different prison or have much reduced interaction with Piper.

Are you sad to hear that Laura Prepon will not be returning as a regular cast member on 'Orange Is the New Black'?

Not suprised her acting is subpar imo, she always plays a variant of Donna and her emotional playacting is cringe worthy.

just my two cents.

I think it was fairly obvious that both Laura Prepon and Jason Biggs characters could be transitory and would go away or have very reduced roles past S01.  (Rather than lack of work) Both seem to be choosy about what project they take on, and are likely expensive, so it seemed likely that either the production might want to cut their screen time to save costs, or that they would want to move on after experimenting with these characters. Yet it is sad to see her go. I hope Jason Biggs doesn't follow suit soon (his character could potentially serve as a compare and contrast between life inside and outside, if the shows decides to explore that further, but even that idea might be a very small story line or they could do that with a guard).

It is sad. Maybe it was because because Laura Prepon's character is the closest to a short term "happy ending" (or "happy incarceration") situation that we can foresee. The season finale was very dark and depressing, and left Piper quickly devolving (to at least a longer sentence), her chances for happiness (or even relief) much reduced. They can easily scrounge up another love interest for her inside, but it wouldn't have the same backstory (Alex had a "love of her life" quality that can't be easily replaced).

A mistake i feel frankly, she is a great actress and i felt this season just fleshed her character out ready for the coming years but it seems thats not to be,i suspected she was leaving with the lack of pics coming from the rest of the cast via twitter.

Is she really that unidated with offers of work though? i hope so as i do have a lot of time for her soo i hope to see her again soon.

Was it the Scientologists who wanted her to leave? As far as the show, how did the junkie chick who od'd get jail time in a fed pen when she committed a state crime? Grab and dash would be state or county not federal.
