Ian Somerhalder ‘Not Thrilled’ about TVD Spin-off ‘The Originals’

Talk about bad blood. Ian Somerhalder, in an interview with the Digital Spy,  recently divulged that he’s “not thrilled” about the upcoming CW series ‘The Originals,’ which is a spin-off of Somerhalder’s show ‘The Vampire Diaries.’

As TVD fans know, ‘The Originals’ will focus on the Mikaelsons aka the original family of vampires and a hybrid (vampire/werewolf). Joseph Morgan (Klaus), Claire Holt (Rebekah) and Daniel Gillies (Elijah) are all set to star as the brutal, yet beloved supernatural family.

Well, Somerhalder told the Digital Spy, “I'm excited for Julie [Plec, TVD and ‘Originals’ executive producer], and for Joseph and all my people," he began, "but I'm a selfish actor -- I'm not a producer on the show, I'm not a writer. My only concern is Damon [Somerhalder’s character], and my show.

"Now, they're going to be taking these characters that mean so much to our show. I'm insanely happy for everyone, but I'm not thrilled. Not that I mind sharing, I just don't want to lose all these amazing actors on our show."

Ian Somerhalder ‘Not Thrilled’ about TVD Spin-off ‘The Originals’That’s not all Somerhalder expressed concern over, as he’s also worried about the series introducing too many characters to fill the void of Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah, "Who are the other people who are gonna be coming on the show? Are they gonna be good? Because it's The CW, and everyone has to be pretty, and there aren't a lot of pretty people that can act well.

"I'm not joking! I'm one of them, that can act well. Not to sound s**tty about it, but casting is always tough. I feel like they worked so hard on casting this show... and hopefully they just continue to put great actors in."

Some might not take well to Somerhalder’s “pretty” comment, but he is somewhat right. The network is full of pretty people and not just on TVD and ‘The Originals.’ For example, we have Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Stephen Amell, Robbie Amell, Katie Cassidy, Kristin Kreuk and Maggie Q -- to name a few.

Regarding the loss of Klaus and his siblings, I understand where Somerhalder is coming from. The Mikaelsons have made a huge success out of ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ However, the show managed to suffice without the characters earlier in the series. Hopefully their absence won’t effect the show too much, and let’s cross our fingers for some crossover episodes!

How do you feel about ‘The Originals’? Are you on the same page as Somerhalder?

‘The Originals’ premieres Thursday, Oct. 3 right after ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 premiere.

I admire his honesty.  And he's right.

I was instantly hooked on TVD from the start, but it has steadily declined a bit, year by year.

Klaus and family were the heart of the show the past couple of seasons, and at least kept the show interesting.

In my mind, the spin-off does not bode well for TVD, but the Originals should be a blast.

The Originals added extra depth and maturity to the show. Before they came along, TVD was just another show cashing in on Twilight's success. And what's-her-name was still likable.
