'Penny Dreadful' Finds Its Dr. Frankenstein

'Penny Dreadful's Dr. Frankenstein Harry Treadaway

It's alive! Showtime's 'Penny Dreadful' is alive... with casting news!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the premium network's upcoming drama featuring classic literature's most infamous monsters has cast its mad doctor. Harry Treadaway ('The Lone Ranger') has signed on to play Dr. Victor Frankenstein in the new series.

The ensemble drama series weaves together the stories of some of literature's most well-known monsters and mad men, pulling together characters from such classic novels as the aforementioned 'Frankenstein,' 'The Picture of Dorian Gray,' and Bram Stoker's 'Dracula.' The characters find their lives entangled in Victorian era London, as they deal with their respective monstrous alienations.

The network also announced that the man who was strongly rumored to be the next Doctor on 'Doctor Who,' Rory Kinnear ('Skyfall'), will also join the cast as an unidentified mystery character. The two actors join an already solid ensemble cast which includes Reeve Carney ('The Tempest') as Dorian Grey, Timothy Dalton ('The Living Daylights') as African explorer Sir Malcolm, Josh Hartnett ('Lucky Number Slevin') as Ethan, and Eva Green ('Casino Royale') as female lead Vanessa.

With all the James Bond alums included in the cast, it should come as no surprise that 'Penny Dreadful' was created by Oscar nominee and 'Skyfall' writer John Logan. Logan is set to write and produce alongside 'Skyfall' director Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris ('Revolutionary Road'). The producers have already signed on immersive horror director Juan Antonio Bayona ('The Orphanage') to helm the first two episodes of the eight episode series.

I'm intrigued to see how they handle Dorian Gray. Will they go the route where he's immortal or impervious to injury, or will they stick to the book where he's mostly just a torment in other's lives?
