FOX has committed to make an adapted pilot based on the British comedy ‘Dead Boss.’ The show has to date only had a run of one season and six episodes on the UK’s BBC Three.
‘Dead Boss’ is about a woman named Helen Stephens who is falsely accused of murdering her boss and given a prison sentence of 12 years.
The original series was created by Sharon Horgan (who stars as Helen) and Holly Walsh. Horgan has already had three shows go to pilot in the US, all with ABC—‘Pulling,’ ‘Bad Mom,’ and ‘Bad Management.’
Patricia Breen (‘Big Love,’ Suburgatory’) will write the adapted pilot for the potential series.
The original series has focused on the funny side of being an outsider thrust into prison life, but has also included elements of a murder mystery.
Since this is a comedy based on a female who is out of place inside a prison, there will no doubt be comparisons to the Netflix original series ‘Orange is the New Black.’ While Helen is wrongfully accused of murder, Piper is guilty of her crime. ‘Dead Boss’ can try to differentiate itself from OITNB by pursuing the murder mystery aspect, as Helen tries her best to prove her innocence.
There is no word yet on who will play the lead or any of the supporting roles for the U.S. version of the show.
